Worship at Newport UMC

Worship here is traditional with hymns from two hymnals. Sermons are based upon scripture, focused to meet the needs of people with their practical life issues. Among the most common themes is the love of Jesus for each of us, our acceptability in the heart of God, the call to care for people, and the gratitude that we have for the power of the Holy Spirit at work in our lives.

We seek to help you in meeting your spiritual needs!

After a time of visiting and announcements, worship opens with lighting of the candles, ringing of the historic church bell, reading a responsive call to worship and singing a hymn of praise. Children's moments, scripture and the sermon follow.

Anthems, hymns and special music are presented throughout the service (accompanied and directed by Judy Lieffring).

Offering our Gifts and lifting up persons in prayer lead into the Pastoral Prayer and the Lord's Prayer.

A Hymn of dedication is sung, the benediction is given and the candles are extinguished and the historic church bell is rung.

On a given Sunday, one may hear the bell ringers ring (led by Mike Nelson) and food may be shared in a meal afterward. Birthdays and anniversaries are celebrated monthly in worship and with refreshments after worship.

Parishioners form a circle at the end of the service and sing "Blessed Be The Tie That Binds." They are dismissed after the benediction and greet each other. Often there is a greeting time during the service.

The Pastor often greets visitors before the service and is available at the back to greet people as they depart from the sanctuary.

Communion is served on the first Sunday of the month. There is no registration or restriction for communion. All who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and wish to receive forgiveness of sins are invited to the Lord's Table for communion.

Children are a vital part of worship!
